How to clean jewellery with a baking soda and salt bath
There are many ways of cleaning jewellery depending on the type of material used to create your piece. I am going to explain the method I use to clean my own costume jewellery, which is the way I find to be easiest and most effective.
1. You will need a suitable container that is big enough for your jewellery to sit in and that is also watertight. A plastic tub works well!
2. Line the container with aluminium foil (the kind you have in the kitchen is perfect!), shiny side up.
3. Add very hot water (not boiling as this may distort or damage your jewellery) to the container so that there is enough to cover your jewellery.
4. Add equal amounts of baking soda and salt (1 tablespoon of each baking soda and salt to 1 cup of water). Stir until dissolved to avoid anything abrasive sitting at the bottom that could scratch your jewellery.
5. Place the jewellery in this solution and leave to soak for around 5 - 10 minutes.
6. Rinse and pat dry. Use a soft cloth to polish to a shine. Ensure jewellery is fully dry before storing.
